How To Make The Right First Impression With Your Office Space

First impressions count, as they say, and for most offices, your reception area is the first point of contact for visiting customers, new employees and other visitors.

Most of us pass judgement in just 7 seconds of meeting. In fact, some research suggests that it can be as little as 1/10th of a second before we start determining our views on an individual or environment. With that in mind, how does your office stand up?

1. A warm and professional receptionist

Your office receptionist is one of the most important members of staff. Like the reception area itself, your receptionist creates one of the very first impressions for all of your visitors.

Make sure they are well-presented, friendly and highly professional at all times.

2. Decor and ambience

Another way to create a great impression is through the design, layout and general feel of your office. We all appreciate well designed and stylish environments, and this can have a massive impact on determining the mood of your visitors when they enter your office for the first time.

This can be achieved in a number of subtle (but proven and effective) ways.

Soft colours like blues and greens on the walls and furniture have been shown to have a positive effect on people’s mood. Artwork with similar colours can bring even more ambience to your reception area.

Let in the fresh air and natural light whenever possible – and create soft but effective lighting when natural light is not an option.

Would music be suitable for the reception in your workplace? If appropriate for your particular business, make sure that you get the volume of the music right and choose tracks or radio stations which will boost rather than sap the mood of your visitors.

Plants are another great way to set off a reception and create even more natural green colour for the area. Plant life has also been shown to reduce stress levels too, so they are definitely a win-win situation for your workplace.

3. Comfortable Seating

Ensure you have attractive and comfortable seating areas where visitors can bide their time and feel relaxed for a few minutes.

Furniture with rounded corners rather than harsh edges often creates positive emotions in people, so bear that in mind if you are contemplating an office redesign.

4. And of course, keep it clean!

Last, but certainly not least – make sure that everything is spotlessly clean in your reception area, otherwise all of your hard work and careful design will have gone to waste.

Ensure that your office reception area has:

  • No dust on any surfaces
  • Super clean windows
  • A spotless carpet (or other flooring)
